2nd grade boat builders

STEM Project - We spent most of the day learning about how to float a boat! Last time we met, we experimented with different materials to see which ones would float. Today we extended that lesson by designing and constructing boats. I asked students if they could think of a way to further extend this experiment and Samuel suggested testing how much weight each boat could hold. I thought that was a great idea so we will be trying that next week!

What's the Science behind how a boat floats? We used BrainPOP to help us research this question. We learned that water displacement, hollowness, weight, and shape are important factors to consider when building a boat.
Black History Month - We researched the Civil Rights Activist Ruby Bridges using Encyclopedia Britannica Online. We also watched a video clip where she met with President Barack Obama as they discussed the famous Norman Rockwell Painting depicting her first day of school.
